The entire course leverages ego mechanisms: logic, western psychology, academic-course-like form, etc. Study and analysis of the text are part of the path, in the same way that practicing the illusory action of forgiveness is. Of course, getting stuck on form is always an issue that needs to be avoided but analysis of the content is a fundamental part of the path. Like other paths (e.g. zen), it uses the ego-based mechanisms -- reinterpreted by a different 'teacher' -- to ultimately see the lack of reality of the ego. Note that many zen practitioners become surprised at the level of analysis and study involved in that path as well. After all, there are many quotes from zen masters that seemingly disparage intellectual study. When one gets involved in that path, the realization is the same as the Course: intellectual study and analysis ARE ego mechanisms but so is EVERYTHING that is part of the path. And, so, each mechanism that was formerly used to mire us in the ego is now leveraged to, ironically, get us past the ego. Getting back to the Course, there's a reason why there's a huge and very academic text. The very practice of applying analysis and study to it IS the practice. It's the same thing as having to look at our ego. In true ego fashion, we like to take some of the ego mechanisms that are used in a path and convince ourselves that these are different from the other parts. I've done it so many times, only to realize 10 years later what I've been doing. In a similar fashion, many course students make the mistake of thinking that they 'need do nothing' and that the painstaking and difficult path of becoming aware of one's dynamics - every day - is not needed. Nothing, of course, could be further from the truth. I've seen it over and over again, from many who've spent decades 'practicing' and convinced they've transcended the ego (modifying the path according to their ego interpretation). All of us -- zen students, course students -- deep down want to maintain the concept of the self but one that is 'one', without a body, without stress, and happier. Getting to the realization of no individuality isn't a pretty picture and it's why modifications of the path mechanisms are always present.
